Acer glabrum var. douglasii - Douglas maple

Native to the northwest of North America, Douglas maple is one of the hardiest maple species. A small tree in habit which sometimes remains shrubby, it grows in mixed forest on the lower slopes and in the valleys of the Rocky Mountains. It is a pioneer species, one of the first to appear after a forest fire or clear felling.

Douglas maple is at its showiest in spring with the sun shining through the bright green flowers and foliage. Its autumn colour is a warm yellow, sometimes with a reddish tint. The large old trees near Alppiruusulaakso (Rhododendron Valley) were planted in the early decades of the 1900s. There are younger trees growing on Pohjoisrinne (Northern Slope).
