Rhododendron 'Mauritz'

Rhododendron 'Mauritz'

'Mauritz' is a low, red-flowered, Finnish rhododendron variety. It was bred at Mustila using pollen from a red-flowered creeping hybrid of the R. Forrestii group on the Mustila rhododendron (R. brachycarpum var. tigerstedtii). The named variety ‘Elviira’ is another product of the same crossing.

Like its sister, 'Mauritz' flowers in mid-May, the blossoms cherry-red, a shade lighter than the brick-red of ’Elviira’. ’Mauritz’ is also slightly larger than ’Elviira’ and grows to less than a metre in ten years. In regard to siting, ‘Mauritz’ is more adaptable than its extremely demanding sister.
